As a result of the Navy’s identification of sampling issues by Tetra Tech EC (TtEC) in 2012, the Navy conducted a thorough data evaluation of radiological samples collected by TtEC. After reviewing more than 900,000 analytical results, the Navy found questionable laboratory data and practices, along with evidence of potential data falsification. The Navy concluded that the data collected by this contractor was not reliable and began plans for retesting.

Independent Oversight and Review

To ensure the integrity of data collection, data analysis, and removal of any potential remaining contamination, the Navy has hired contractors to monitor work to ensure proper sampling methods are followed, and to verify legitimacy of the results. Independent radiological experts will review sampling plans, results, and reports. The new data collected by the Navy will be analyzed at approved off-site laboratories to determine if it meets cleanup objectives defined in each parcel’s ROD.  In addition, federal and state regulatory agencies including the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), and the California Department of Public Health will have the opportunity to conduct independent sampling to confirm the Navy’s results.

Hunters Point Radiological Cleanup and Public Safety

Based on the historical operations at HPNS, radiological cleanup is required prior to transfer of the former shipyard to the City of San Francisco. The Navy's first priority throughout this process is public health and safety. This video explains how the Navy is conducting the cleanup while ensuring continued public safety.
