Welcome to the Department of the Navy (Navy) website for the Environmental
Impact Statement (EIS) for the Disposal and Reuse of Naval Air Station (NAS)
Brunswick. This site has been developed in support of The National Environmental
Policy Act’s (NEPAs) environmental review process for the disposal and reuse of
NAS Brunswick in a manner consistent with the Brunswick Local Redevelopment
Authority (Brunswick LRA) Reuse Master Plan. For this EIS, the Navy evaluated
the potential environmental impacts of the proposed action to dispose of NAS
Brunswick, the McKeen Street Housing Annex, the East Brunswick Radio Transmitter
Site, and the Sabino Hill Rake Station. NAS Brunswick, the McKeen Street Housing
Annex and the East Brunswick Radio Transmitter Site are all located within the
Town of Brunswick, Maine. The Sabino Hill Rake Station is located within the
Town of Phippsburg, Maine.
BACKGROUND NAS Brunswick is situated on approximately
3,117 acres in the town of Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine. The facility is
approximately 27 miles northeast of Portland and 31 miles south of the state
capitol of Augusta. The main gate to the installation is located on Bath Road,
approximately 2 miles east of the downtown Brunswick business district. The Navy
is required to close NAS Brunswick in accordance with Public Law 101-510, the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act of
1990, as amended in 2005 (BRAC Closure Law). The purpose of the proposed action (as evaluated in the EIS)
is to provide for the disposal of NAS Brunswick and its outlying properties by the Navy and its reuse in a
manner consistent with the Brunswick Naval Air Station Reuse Master Plan. This EIS has been prepared in
compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and EIS guidelines.
The Navy is committed to involving the community throughout the EIS process. Contained within this website is an overview of the EIS process, public viewing locations of the Draft EIS and a copy of
the Final EIS, including
figures and supporting documents. The publication of the Notice of Availability (NOA)
in the Federal Register on November 23, 2010 marked the start of a mandatory 30-day wait period prior to the Navy issuing a Record of Decision (ROD).
