View/HideView/Hide Base Summary

Base Property and Historical Use
The Naval Air Station (NAS) Alameda, now commonly referred to as Alameda Point, is a site consisting of 2,675 acres of land (1,560 uplands and 1,115 submerged) situated immediately southwest of the central business district of Oakland and located in the City of Alameda. Alameda Point is bordered on the north by the Oakland Inner Harbor or Estuary, on the west and south by San Francisco Bay and the east by the remaining two-thirds of the City of Alameda. The south and west portions of Alameda Point provide a panoramic vista of the Bay Bridge and the City of San Francisco. In 1936, the United States Government purchased 1,000 acres from the City of Alameda for the future NAS Alameda. NAS Alameda was commissioned in 1940 and supported the Department of the Navy's defense mission until operational closure. Prior to its closure, NAS Alameda was homeport to two nuclear carriers and two nuclear cruisers and performed operations level maintenance of these ships. NAS Alameda contains a National Register eligible World War II Historic District and is currently a host to the USS Hornet museum via lease to City of Alameda.

Closure date, planned reuses, parcels transferred
NAS Alameda was identified for BRAC closure in 1993. Mission cease date was 31 January 1997 and operational closure occurred on 30 April 1997. The Local Redevelopment Authority, the Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority (ARRA), and the Department of the Navy (DON) executed an Economic Development Conveyance Memorandum of Agreement (EDC MOA) in 2000 which simultaneously conveyed the first parcel, a 73 acre property known as East Housing. The EDC MOA also authorized the lease of all property west of Main Street to the ARRA (with the exception of parcels intended for federal-to-federal transfer) to create interim reuse and generate revenues to support redevelopment. The Lease gives the ARRA authority to determine which subleases are appropriate and in exchange provides security and maintenance for the entire leased premises.

In March 2008, the Navy conveyed the former Marina Village Housing area to the United States Coast Guard.

In May 2009, the DON conveyed the Public Benefit Conveyance Parcel known as PBC-1 (44 acres) to the Department of Interior. Ultimately, PBC-1 will be transferred to the City of Alameda for a community recreation/ sports complex.

Remaining Disposal Work
A considerable portion of the property is slated for transfer to ARRA (approximately 1,679 acres). The ARRA terminated its relationship with its master developer, SunCal Companies, in July 2010 and is currently conducting community meetings to solicit input on the future development plan for the former Naval Air Station. This page will be updated once the development plan and the conveyance strategy for the ARRA property are finalized.
