The Department of the Navy, in cooperation with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, has begun a Five-Year Review (FYR) of the remedies selected at Nomans Land Island National Wildlife Refuge, Chilmark, Massachusetts. The Navy will solicit concerns and comments about the FYR remedies and performance through questionnaires and interviews with interested parties. Public participation is encouraged and welcomed. Former Naval Air Station (NAS) South Weymouth Completion of Fourth 5-Year Review - January 2025

The United States Navy, in partnership with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP), has completed the fourth Five-Year Review of the selected remedies being implemented to address environmental contamination at former Naval Air Station (NAS) South Weymouth. The report is available for review at Abington Public Library, Hingham Public Library, Memorial Library in Rockland, MA, and Tufts Library in Weymouth, MA, during normal business hours.

NAVFAC BRAC Transfers Land from former Naval Air Station South Weymouth

The Department of the Navy (DON) Base Realignment and Closure Program Management Office (BRAC PMO) transferred more than nine acres of land and improvements from former Naval Air Station South Weymouth, Massachusetts to the Southfield Redevelopment Authority via an Economic Development Conveyance (EDC) on March 27.

Since the base closure in 1997, the BRAC PMO has transferred 655 of 680 available acres, or approximately 98% of the former base.

The DON Base Realignment and Closure Program Management Office's (BRAC PMO) mission is to expeditiously and cost effectively provide all services necessary to realign, close, and dispose of Navy BRAC properties through sound business management practices and transformational thinking to support the warfighter and provide savings to DON and the federal taxpayer.

Notice of Availability and Public Comment Period for NoMans Land Island, CHILMARK

The U.S. Navy encourages the public to comment on the Proposed Remedial Action Plan (Proposed Plan) for Nomans Land Island, Chilmark, Massachusetts located 2.7 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard Island. In compliance with Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), the Proposed Plan presents the Navy’s proposed remedial approach to address risks to human health, the environment and safety for Nomans Land Island. The Proposed Plan proposes the preferred remedy of Institutional Controls/Public Awareness and Enforcement to address remaining risks associated with Nomans Land Island to limit access and use of the property, to ensure safety, and to maintain use of the island as an unmanned national wildlife habitat.
