Former Naval Air Station South Weymouth

Notice of Availability of the Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD) for Operable Unit (OU) 25, Hangar 1, at former Naval Air Station South Weymouth, Massachusetts

10/10/19

The Navy has completed this September 2019 ESD which changes the selected remedy outlined in the December 2011 ESD to the 2010 Record of Decision (ROD) to remove the Land Use Controls (LUCs) established in the December 2011 ESD related to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).    The LUCs established in the December 2011 ESD are no longer necessary because groundwater use at the Hangar 1 site is now restricted by the LUCs outlined in the February 2018 Basewide PFOS and PFOA Land Use Control Implementation Plan (LUCIP).   Groundwater restrictions in the Basewide PFOS and PFOA LUCIP protect the U.S. Navy’s investigation of PFOS and PFOA and restrict the use and disturbance of groundwater in portions of the base, including Hangar 1.  This September 2019 ESD will prevent having two overlapping LUCs.
