Naval Air Station Key West

Naval Air Station Key West

Base Summary

Base Property and Historical Use
The Navy has had a presence on Key West off and on since 1823. As a result of the Vietnam War, the Department of Defense determined that the military had excessive shore and force structure beyond what was required to continue its military mission. Ultimately, the Naval Station was disestablished in 1974. Conditions created by lack of ongoing mission at the Naval Air Station during 1978 and 1979 resulted in the disestablishment of some activities.
Closure date, planned reuses, parcels transferred
In 1995, the Federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) designated Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West for realignment. There are approximately 175 acres involved in operational closure at NAS Key West.
Remaining disposal work
NAS Key West consists of 18 parcels: 9 public benefit conveyances, 2 economic development conveyances, 5 fed-to-fed transfers, 1 homeless, and 1 negotiated sale. The property will be redeveloped by the City of Key West for parks and recreation. The last .73 acres was transferred to the City of Key West in May 2005.
