Record of Decision for Nomans Land Island

This notice is to inform the community of the availability of the Record of Decision (ROD) for Nomans Land Island, Chilmark, Massachusetts, an uninhabited 628-acre island located in the Atlantic Ocean, lying approximately 2.7 miles south of Aquinnah (Gay Head), Martha’s Vineyard Island. The Department of the Navy (Navy), the lead agency for site activities, with the approval of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the concurrence of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), selected the remedy detailed in the ROD. The remedy selected in this ROD is necessary to protect public health from actual or threatened exposure to surface and subsurface explosives hazards presented by potential munitions on land and in the nearshore marine environment of Nomans Land Island that may present an imminent and substantial endangerment to public welfare.

The Selected Remedy for Nomans Land Island, known as Alternative S-2, includes Institutional Controls, Public Awareness and Enforcement for both the terrestrial portion of Nomans Land Island and the nearshore marine environment necessary to ensure protection of human health and the environment.
