At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, a grass fire began outside the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (HPNS) at Quesada Avenue and Fitch Street, and spread onto HPNS. The San Francisco Fire Department responded with support from the Navy contractors ECC and RSI. The contractors used water trucks to spread water to help suppress the fire and created a fire break. The fire was extinguished at approximately 2:30 p.m. and monitored afterward for hot spots.

There was no damage to structures or any injuries. The San Francisco Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.

The grass fire was on the perimeter of Parcel E-2, a former landfill covered by an 8-foot soil cover. The Navy’s maintenance program includes grass mowing. The Navy is evaluating the landfill gas monitoring system and landfill soil cap to determine if any repairs are needed.

The Navy will provide any updates we have on the fire when we address the Hunters Point Shipyard Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) on Monday, July 27, at 6 p.m. local time.
