  • 27 Buildings Demolished Under Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA)
    • Identified in the Historical Radiological Assessment and Record of Decisions as buildings where historical radiological activities have occurred
       
  • 77 Buildings with no CERCLA Requirements
  • Estimating 5-8 years timeframe to complete the demolition program
 
 
Building Demolition Phase 1
  • First Phase of Building Demolition is Parcel G Buildings 366, 351, 351A, 401, 411, 439, 408 (slab only)
     
  • Buildings require demolition under CERCLA
    • Buildings identified as potential historical use of radiological equipment or material
    • Buildings were surveyed in 2022, all data is below the goals in the Record of Decision
      • Reports are in progress

Building Demolition Environmental Considerations

  • Structural
    • Buildings several decades old and not occupied or maintained
    • Structural integrity questionable in some areas
  • Hazardous Materials / Hazardous Waste (HAZMAT/HAZWASTE)
    • Lead in paint and other building components
    • Asbestos-containing material in various parts of the building
    • Possible polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in some fixture
  • Disposal
    • Accurate manifesting of waste required
    • All waste for first phase will go out of California due to the moratorium on decommissioned waste
    • All waste will go through a radiological portal before leaving base
    • Manifests are signed by authorized Navy personnel
    • All trucks need to be covered entering and leaving
