Cleanup at Gateview Avenue Neighborhood
In the first half of 2017, the Navy is completing cleanup in the Gateview Avenue Neighborhood. You may have noticed that the Navy has demolished Buildings 1311, 1313 and 1325. This was done so that the Navy could dig down and reach petroleum that is between 4 and 10 feet underground. This petroleum was the result of old tanks leaking into the groundwater; this occured decades ago and the petroleum has -- over the decades -- changed the chemistry of the ground water, allowing naturally occurring metals and minerals in the soil to "leach out" into the groundwater. The metal of concern here is arsenic; arsenic levels in the groundwater are elevated and pose a potential risk to San Francisco Bay. This is NOT a concern for residents living in the neighborhood. 

The Navy is taking two steps to cleanup this area.

• First, we are digging out much of the petroleum-saturated soil (from 4ft to 10ft below ground surface).
• Second, we will add a commonly used oxygen-releasing compound to change underground conditions and allow the naturally-occurring microbes in the soil to digest any remaining petroleum in the soil and groundwater.

Navy working with SF Water Department during Petroleum Cleanup

The United States Navy is continuing its environmental cleanup actions within the residential neighborhood. In order to complete the environmental work, the City of San Francisco Water Department will work on the water line running beneath Gateview Avenue. This flyer provides information on how and where the work will be conducted.
